Indigenous Cultural Safety in Research Administration: A Step Beyond Equity Diversity and Inclusion

While acknowledging the ways in which both research and research administrative processes have been and continue to be harmful to Indigenous peoples and communities, the session will highlight how ICS can be specifically applied in research administration to create culturally safe spaces where Indigenous peoples feel valued and supported when working in institutional research environments.

By recognizing ongoing injustices in the context of research, and the responsibility institutions have in reconciliation efforts and creating social justice, ICS frameworks can support the understanding of how the research administrative role can actively support the self-determination and empowerment of Indigenous participants and partners.

The workshop will provide participants with the opportunity to engage in a co-creative and interactive methods such as Visual Metaphor Mapping, Organizational Culture and Readiness for Change Assessment, Collective and Strategic Strategizing, Implementation and Prioritization Matrix, among others as required, that will result in practical and straightforward ICS strategies. We will also discuss inclusive and ethical practices when working in partnership with and under the leadership of Indigenous communities.

This workshop explores the core principles of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) and emphasizes the importance of Indigenous Cultural Safety (ICS) as a distinct but complementary framework. ICS offers specific guidelines and principles that address colonial historical injustices as well as relationship-building processes between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples, including organizational readiness for change.

Unlike EDI, which aims for equitable and inclusive environments for all groups, ICS focuses on power imbalances inherent in colonialism and ensures that Indigenous cultures, knowledge, and identities are not only included but respected and safeguarded.

Duration: 4 hours (ideal for the depth of content and engagement)

Delivery Format: In-person (we have found that the interactive nature of the workshop works best in person)

Cost: CAD $2500 + GST (includes 2 facilitators)

Participants: 50 people maximum
